Preventative maintenance is the BEST course of action to follow to have your generator ready when you need it!  Like any mechanical device, it can fail.  If you want your generator to work when you need it have the unit serviced in the spring and load bank tested in the fall.  Much like changing the oil on your vehicle, servicing the fluids on your generator promotes a long healthy life!  Similarly, the load bank runs your unit at its required speeds with appropriate little pressure on it to perform.  This lets us look at the system and make sure your genset is ready when you need it.
